Ratner Companies started with one salon and two Stylists back in 1974. Dennis Ratner was an up-and-coming hairdresser working in his father's Louis salon in Washington, D.C. It was the beginning of a new era, and Dennis envisioned a unisex salon convenient for the whole family. Over dinner with then-wife and fellow Stylist Ann, Dennis sketched on a cocktail napkin a business plan that laid the groundwork for the first Hair Cuttery salon. Holiday Hair On The Cheap

November, 2003 - The holidays are not the time to splurge on big-ticket items for yourself (well, maybe ONE spa pedicure, a little black dress and top-of-the-line lip gloss for all your troubles!). Saving money for all the friends and loved ones on your gift list is a must!

The experts at Hair Cuttery have some suggestions for saving on your hair this holiday season without sacrificing cute `dos and cool looks!

  1. Skip the pricey pin with the semi-precious stones for your holiday updo. Sew in funky buttons or flower blooms, or add hatpins for a more antique look. Twist glittered pantyhose into pinned ringlets. Sprinkle on the glitter, wrap beads around the finished look, or pin on vibrant-colored ornamental butterflies, fireflies or even bugs! Check clearance fashion jewelry racks, craft stores or even discount department stores for supplies.
  2. Out of your favorite Frederic Fekkai styling cream, but it's not in your budget for more? Water down your favorite conditioner to add a little hold, instead.
  3. Save a trip to your hair colorist until New Year's Eve by hiding your natural-colored roots with a little texture. Curling or even teasing your hair will add dimension and detract attention away from your roots. If you have a lot of regrowth, style your hair into an updo and add accessories.
  4. Hold off on the Japanese straightening system until spring. Get your hair stick-straight by using sleeking products and a flatiron from your local drug store. Or, wrap your hair while it' s still wet and let it dry thoroughly for a low-maintenance straightening effect. And, most salons offer blowdry-straightening services.
  5. Want to save a little money on beauty gift baskets for your friends? Create spa kits with a quick trip to the local drug store. Stuff a pretty basket with a ribbon-trimmed face cloth or mit, face mask, bath salts and a scented candle. Or, fill a fishbowl or vase with a mixture of ponytail bands, hairclips and pretty pins and top with a frankly fake flower.
