Ratner Companies started with one salon and two Stylists back in 1974. Dennis Ratner was an up-and-coming hairdresser working in his father's Louis salon in Washington, D.C. It was the beginning of a new era, and Dennis envisioned a unisex salon convenient for the whole family. Over dinner with then-wife and fellow Stylist Ann, Dennis sketched on a cocktail napkin a business plan that laid the groundwork for the first Hair Cuttery salon. Texture Tease
Cool Coifs by ColorWorks Salons

Spring, 2005 - Although known as a color specialist, Tracy Guthrie, National Artistic Leader of ColorWorks Salons, a Washington DC based chain of color specialty salons, decided to create a collection that is more about the texture than anything else. Taking an array of lengths and natural textures, she and her talented teammates applied various finishing techniques to create simply stunning results.

Dagger

To produce this fun effect for Anne’s longer blunt cut hair, Tracy started with a dimensional golden blonde hue. Beginning with a base softener to lighten the natural level, she then applied some subtle highlights to break up the shape. Dark brown random low light panels were done back to back to add more depth overall.

For the actual textured effect, Redken In the Loop curl enhancing lotion is dispersed all over onto towel-dried hair, then Sharp Edge, a dry foam that transforms into a lightweight wax, is layered in through the ends. The hair is allowed to dry naturally so that the heat of the iron is the first heat to hit the hair, thus allowing it to set well.

Random sized and shaped sections are saturated heavily with both Rough Paste and Spray Starch. These sections are twisted and lightly tapped with a flat iron to seal in the shape. The result is a fun, almost dagger-like feel that can be worn straight down or worked back into a partial or full upstyle.

Q

For Gelinia, Tracy started with a rounded one length cut on naturally curly hair, then applied an equal part combination of Glass and Concrete all over the towel- dry hair. Next she spiral set 1/4 inch sections on drinking straws, then dried under a hood dryer. Once the set was completely dry, the straws are removed and the sections are pieced out with Glass. A bit of backcombing at the base makes way for a fun and intentionally furry effect.

Goddess

Kamila has a longer layered cut with a warm dark brown hue. Her naturally wavy hair is wet set with Redken Thickening Lotion and Spray Starch then is allowed to dry naturally. Once completely dry, Tracy tong set the entire head with Spray Starch, alternating random sized sections between a small and medium barrel iron. Once the entire head is complete, she backcombed as needed, swept up the length and modified the shape by wrapping visually with dark thread. This instills a very unique outward shape on a highly textured foundation.

Coiled FX

These beautifully bouncy curls by Tammy Madison, Education Leader of ColorWorks, are a modern take on classic texture.

To instill a rich, yet dimensional hue for Carolina, Tammy started with a base softener to lighten and warm up the natural color a bit, then applied rich brown toffee highlights around the face to add dimension.

The cut involves longer layers on shoulder length hair that reveal some framing qualities around her face. Working on wet hair, Tammy cocktailed one part Redken Concrete and 2 parts Glass, then applied the mixture all the way through from the roots to the ends. Next she spiral set medium sized sections on large perm rods and allowed the hair to dry under a hot hood dryer. Once completely dry the individual curls are unfurled and lightly pieced with Glass to yield soft and very sexy coils.

Dolled Up

To create this glamorous, retro inspired pin up girl, stylist Mezei Jefferson of ColorWorks in Towson, Maryland started with all one-length hair and applied a few soft razor cut layers. For the color he produced a very pastel blonde by lightening up the base color then heavily highlighting, slicing with 1/4 inch of ease in between.

For the style, Mezei applied Redken Contour all the way through the wet hair, then added Guts at the root for volume. After blow-drying most of the way with a paddle brush, he then used a round brush at the ends. Hot Set and Airtight were sprayed on before using a large barrel iron to curl the length. He pinned the curls in to retain the shape until they cooled. Two sections on top and at the sides are backcombed then smoothed into a roll. The curls at the back are let down and are pieced with Graphic Wax for separation and detail.

Shearly Shattered

This highly shattered shape by Sebastian Bandith of ColorWorks in Arlington, Virginia is very disconnected all over. The color, which accents the texture, features a violet red base with some random caramel highlights and a deeper shade of violet over the fringe (bangs).

To style, Redken Guts is applied at the root for volume while Smooth Down Heat Glide is used on the ends before blow-drying with a Denman brush. Once completely dry, Sebastian applied a cocktail of Rough Paste and Glass, then flat ironed from the mid shaft to the ends. Last he finished by piecing lightly with more of the Rough Paste and Glass cocktail.

Violet Femme

Jean Jekal of ColorWorks Salon in Arlington, Virginia created an areo-dynamic, rippling mane effect. Utilizing a multi-panel technique of deep violet and rich plum hues. Bold electric currents of violet are emphasized in regions where extreme Exaggeration is placed. Combining carved edges with shattered edges gives maximum versatility.

To create this edgy style and textured finish, Jean blow-dried flat to the round of the head form from different directions. This allows all free range of movement and complete sleekness. To emphasize the disconnection a working wax or paste is used to flick the ends out.

Live Wire

This lengthy style by Heather Finkel of ColorWorks in Arlington, Virginia is all about asymmetry. The main span in back is cut blunt, which then blends in front into a bold asymmetrical fringe that begins at the corner of one eye and gradually reached the contour of the jawline.

This fun and practical golden blonde hue started with a neutral base with large light and darker panels strategically placed to break up the shape. The roots were then shadowed with a dark blonde to give the color a more natural look.

To style, smoothing cream with a few drops of gloss are applied onto the damp hair from the mid shaft to the ends. After combing through, the hair is blown dry mainly with just fingers, then is smoothed with a Denman brush. More gloss is applied over the surface to instill the perfect finish.

Flourishing Acts

Wanting to create a soft and feminine feel, stylist and make up artist Anastacia of ColorWorks Salon in Fairfax, Virginia took a classic look and applied a flower inspired theme throughout. Her first thought was to transform a face into a flower using make up, then she decided to incorporate the hair into the same design.

For the hair, she started with chin length strands in a baby blonde hue then added extensions for length. Redken Moist Ends leave in treatment is applied all over before blow-drying straight with a Denman brush. Once dry the length is flat ironed with Spray Starch, then is finished with Vinyl Glam for shine.

To create the upstyle she started high in the crown adding curl to form the petals then worked outwards. After incorporating the front into the back, she pinned everything into place, then misted Wilpower to hold.
