ColorWorks’
Board Certified Experts Raise
the Bar for Colorists Everywhere
June,
2003 - There’s
no doubt about it. Color is
the hottest ticket in any salon
today. As demand for the service
rises, so do client expectations
for perfect color, every time.
Always staying ahead of the
curve, the professionals at
ColorWorks
are once again raising the bar,
creating a movement in their
salons that is sure to influence
the standard for colorists everywhere.
Three colorists
from the salon’s Arlington,
VA location as well as the business’s
education leader are all now
certified by the Southern California-based
American
Board of Certified Haircolorists.
The colorists – Teresa
Miller, Amal Hammad, Tammy Madison
and Tracy Guthrie – are
four of only 11 certified in
the entire state of Virginia.
“We
are so proud to have such expertise
concentrated in one place,”
said Allyson
Hurley, who heads up
the ColorWorks family, now with
four salons in Arlington, Baltimore,
MD, Rockville, MD and Annapolis,
MD. “For color experts
like ourselves, it’s only
natural to continually set higher
standards and reach for new
goals. The way we see it, it’s
absolutely essential.”
In order to
become certified, colorists
must complete a rigorous set
of written exams, performance
evaluations and interactive
demonstrations with real-life
client scenarios. It’s
a tough test requiring great
determination and skill, said
Dana
Rogalski, board representative.
“Most
of the people who take the test
have eight years or more experience
coloring hair. And only 55 percent
of the people who take the exam
pass it the first time,”
Rogalski said.
Tammy Madison,
who is in charge of continuing
education for the four ColorWorks
salons, said the exam process,
“really made me think
out of the box. It’s definitely
helped me grow my skills, and
I’ve been doing color
for years.” She and Hurley
hope that eventually, 50 percent
of each ColorWorks salon will
be board-certified.
In the meantime,
the four certified colorists
at Pentagon Row are inspiring
their colleagues. “I think
the other colorists can feel
the added confidence we have
when we’re with our clients,”
said Tracy Guthrie, who is the
education director for the Pentagon
Row salon and is also a mentor
to those training for the board
exams. “They sense the
creativity and excitement and
so do our clients. It really
is an inspiration.”
ColorWorks
is the up-and-coming division
of Ratner Companies, the parent
organization for Hair Cuttery
in the United States and the
United Kingdom. Founded by licensed
stylist and CEO Dennis
Ratner, the company also
oversees Bubbles, Salon Cielo
and Salon Plaza.
