Ratner Companies started with one salon and two Stylists back in 1974. Dennis Ratner was an up-and-coming hairdresser working in his father's Louis salon in Washington, D.C. It was the beginning of a new era, and Dennis envisioned a unisex salon convenient for the whole family. Over dinner with then-wife and fellow Stylist Ann, Dennis sketched on a cocktail napkin a business plan that laid the groundwork for the first Hair Cuttery salon. ColorWorks SALON CELEBRATES GRAND OPENING AT PENTAGON ROW SHOPPING PLAZA

ColorWorks Is the Mid-Atlantic’s First In a Chain of Hair Color Service Salons

August, 2001 – ColorWorks, the first haircolor specialty salon in the mid-Atlantic region, will celebrate its grand opening Saturday, September 15 from 7 until 10 p.m. at 1101 S. Joyce Street in the Pentagon Row shopping center. Models will demonstrate colorful coiffures created by the salon’s 10 expert stylists who will also be on hand to talk about the latest in haircolor fashion. Beverages, desserts and free gifts will be offered to all in attendance while $5 will go to Locks of Love for all attendees who bring their invitation. Locks of Love designs wigs for disadvantaged children with permanent medical baldness.

The salon, which offers a full spectrum of hair color services at moderate to upscale prices, will soon be followed by the introduction of three additional ColorWorks salons in the metropolitan area in the coming year. “We are thrilled about this because it allows our clientele to benefit from our stylists’ expert knowledge on the hottest trend in hair services today: color,” said Dennis Ratner, founder and CEO of Ratner Companies, parent corporation of ColorWorks. “And because ColorWorks focuses on color services, our stylists will remain committed to continual color education, keeping up with the latest

A salon specializing in haircolor services is an idea whose time has come, said Ratner Companies Business Unit Leader Allyson Hurley. Fifty percent of women age 13 to 69 color their hair. Many do so at home while others are first-time color customers seeking the services of salons that don’t specialize in color. “We’re reaching out to people who wear haircolor as fashion, people who want to rely on skilled colorists to help them choose the right shade and level of color to enhance their image.”

ColorWorks will provide all aspects of coloring and finishing services. The salon has a staff of 10 skilled colorists offering a variety of color services including highlights and lowlights, dimensional color and color correction and conversion. Prices start at $40 for basic services, while prices for correction and conversion will be determined during consultation. Styling prices for shampoo, cuts and blowdry services start at $18 and go up to $25.

In addition to the ColorWorks salons, Ratner Companies manages 800 Hair Cuttery salons in the United States and the United Kingdom. The company also oversees Bubbles and Salon Plaza salons, which are concentrated in the Washington, D.C. area.
