Ratner Companies started with one salon and two Stylists back in 1974. Dennis Ratner was an up-and-coming hairdresser working in his father's Louis salon in Washington, D.C. It was the beginning of a new era, and Dennis envisioned a unisex salon convenient for the whole family. Over dinner with then-wife and fellow Stylist Ann, Dennis sketched on a cocktail napkin a business plan that laid the groundwork for the first Hair Cuttery salon. COLORWORKS ARTISTIC LEADER HONORED
AT NORTH AMERICAN HAIRSTYLING AWARDS

Falls Church, VA, July 31, 2004 -- Tracy Guthrie, national artistic leader for Washington, D.C.-based ColorWorks Salon, was honored for the caliber of her work at the 2004 North American Hairstyling Awards (NAHA), held in Las Vegas July 10. Guthrie, a master colorist and hairstylist, was named a finalist in the category of North American Hairstylist of the Year, which recognizes individual stylists for excellence, artistry and diversity.

Guthrie was one of a record 487 entries for this year’s NAHA awards, which is considered to be the most prestigious hairstyling awards program in the industry. Previous winners include industry greats Scott Cole, Dwight Miller and Ruth Roche. Guthrie was the only finalist in her category from the United States.

“Being considered for NAHA has always been a major goal for me,” Guthrie said. “It’s such a rewarding process, from the hairstyling, to the photo shoot, to the awards ceremony itself.”

To prepare for the competition, Guthrie spent several days in Los Angeles with top photography team David Winterhalter and Kelly Taggart to build the portfolio that would eventually be reviewed by NAHA judges. The final collection—titled In the Flesh—
consists of five very diverse looks in hair color, texture and design emphasizing the face and hair rather than the fashions.

“The beauty of the woman is the focus in this collection. I took each model, and gave her a look that fit her personality, style, body type and coloration,” said Guthrie. “I took her natural beauty and enhanced it.”

Guthrie, who is an American Board Certified Colorist and mentor, as well as a Redken performing artist and seasoned educator, boasts 13 years of salon experience, including 11 as a professional salon educator. From main stage to salon workshops, she wins audiences over through her approachable, down-to-earth style of mentoring.

ColorWorks is an upscale salon specializing in all hair color services with six locations in Maryland and Virginia. A division of Ratner Companies, ColorWorks was founded by licensed stylist and CEO Dennis Ratner.
