Ratner Companies started with one salon and two Stylists back in 1974. Dennis Ratner was an up-and-coming hairdresser working in his father's Louis salon in Washington, D.C. It was the beginning of a new era, and Dennis envisioned a unisex salon convenient for the whole family. Over dinner with then-wife and fellow Stylist Ann, Dennis sketched on a cocktail napkin a business plan that laid the groundwork for the first Hair Cuttery salon. Washington Stylists Bring out Best Weapons For Annual “Hair Warfare” Competition

November, 2003 - Washington waged a different kind of war from a crowded ballroom one recent Sunday night, where models battled for top honors in a showcase of hairstyles and costumes that ranged from elegant to outrageous.

The occasion: Hair Warfare, the 9th Annual Hair Competition for D.C.-based Bubbles and Salon Cielo and Spas, sponsored by Sebastian International. Stylists from 25 of the company’s salons used models to demonstrate their talents and create looks that are a far cry from the bobs and blonde highlights that fill the books on an average day in the salon.

“This is a great way for our stylists to vent creative energy and to get inspired,” said Ann Ratner, the British-born stylist who founded and still leads Bubbles and Salon Cielo. “Every year, it gets better. Everyone is trying to outdo each other, but they still learn from each other and have a lot of fun in the process.”

Participants were invited to enter for individual competition and/or salon team competition. Individual entries were judged for overall look with an emphasis on hair in three different categories—day, evening and fantasy looks. Fantasy models were adorned with extensions, accessories and other wearable props inspired by movies, movements, trends and exotic birds. Evening models stood out for their high-fashion styles reminiscent of runways coiffures, while day models celebrated trendy, wearable looks.

Salon teams were judged for their technical, creative and collaborative workfeatured during a 5-minute performance illuminated by lights, music and stage props. “The stylists get into the whole performance side of the competition as much as they do the hair,” Ratner said.

Judged by performing artists from throughout the industry,the 1st place winners of the competition were:

  • Jamie Sugg, Bubbles - Annapolis Mall, Individual Day Competition;
  • Rudy Solorzano, Bubbles – Towson Town Center, Individual Evening Competition;
  • Tutu Luangrath, Bubbles – K Street, Individual Fantasy Competition; and
  • Bubbles – K Street, SalonCompetition.

Both Bubbles and Salon Cielo are headquartered in Falls Church, Virginia. Bubbles, catering to the hip and trendy urban professional, has 23 salons in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Washington, D.C. and Virginia. With eight locations in Washington, D.C., Virginia, Maryland and Florida, Salon Cielo is an upscale, sophisticated salon for the most discriminating client.
